Oil stick on cotton rag paper mounted on Belgian linen the ‘Tavarua Kava Jazz’ series, in which deceptively crude archetypal figures express the fundamental joys, movement and simultaneously the tensions and traumas that course through contemporary life.

The sense of fast moving newsprint during the printing process employs intentional, random and accidental imagery providing a foundation or back story for the works.

In the foreground the figures are characterized by rubbing layer upon layer of oil stick creating the look of neoprene into the pictorial surface.

Embellishing the narrative a common car culture craft from the Southern California surfing and car culture, pin-striped figures again enhance the narratives, of dancing, singing, protesting, running, laughing and or weeping.

This repeated motif can been seen as a replication of this alphabetical element in his ever expanding visual language included in the Opera and the Monumental Word Paintings.

About Tavarua

Tavarua an island in Fiji has an area of 29 acres (120,000 m2), slightly larger than Manhattan’s Battery Park. It is close to the main Fijian island, Viti Levu, and is surrounded by a coral reef. It is also known to be shaped, somewhat, like a heart.

There are seven main surfing breaks on Tavarua: Cloudbreak, Restaurants, Tavarua Rights, Swimming Pools, Namotu Left, Wilkes Pass, and Desperations. Cloudbreak, is a powerful left a mile off the island that breaks over coral reef.
