Sculpture: Fits & Starts Editions

Hand crafted by the artist in cortin steel. Each piece of the work was cut using a high pressure industrial water jet to maintain edition consistency. Hand welded and finished, each numbered and signed and unique with its own finish and patina.

My sculpture practice revolves around the creation of work meticulously handcrafted from CorTen, steel, wood, fibergalss and lucite. Drawing inspiration from renowned sculptors such as Richard Serra, Bruce Nauman, Donald Judd, Michael Heizer, and Jean Arp, I aim to capture the essence of their pioneering spirit while forging my own artistic path.

Like these esteemed sculptors, I find beauty in the raw and elemental nature of materials. CorTen steel, with its inherent strength and weathering properties, serves as the foundation for my artistic exploration. It embodies a harmonious blend of industrial robustness and organic vulnerability, allowing me to convey a sense of both permanence and transience within my work.

To maintain the consistency of each edition, I employ a high-pressure industrial water jet to cut every individual of steel piece. This precision technique ensures that every element of the sculpture adheres to my vision, while also paying homage to the meticulous craftsmanship employed by artists like Richard Serra and Donald Judd. It is through this process that I attain the desired unity and coherence within my series.

The hand welding and finishing techniques I employ breathe life into the steel, infusing each sculpture with its own distinctive character. Every piece is numbered and signed, emphasizing the uniqueness of each creation. This personal touch establishes a direct connection between the artwork and its viewer, inviting them to explore the depths of their own emotions and interpretations.

Through a meticulous combination of craftsmanship and artistic expression, I aim to evoke a sense of wonder and contemplation. I draw inspiration from the bold, minimalist forms of Richard Serra and Donald Judd, as well as the conceptual explorations of Bruce Nauman. Their influence guides me as I seek to create an immersive experience for the viewer, engaging them in a dialogue that transcends the boundaries of time and space.

Within each finished sculpture, a subtle interplay of surface finishes and patinas emerges. These unique qualities enhance the depth and richness of the work, reminiscent of the diverse textures and organic forms found in the sculptures of Michael Heizer and Jean Arp. The interplay between the steel’s weathered exterior and the meticulous construction beneath invites contemplation of the cyclical nature of existence, the passage of time, and the interdependence of humanity and the natural world.

In the convergence of industrial precision, hand craftsmanship, and the spirit of artistic masters, my sculptures aspire to transcend mere objects, becoming portals to introspection and engagement. Through their commanding presence and nuanced details, I invite viewers to immerse themselves in the dialogue between form and material, connecting with the timeless language of sculpture and embracing the transformative power of art.
